Here is some info on Stewart, Elder & The Locomotive:
William Stewart (served from March 8, 1850 - November 20, 1856) At fifteen minutes to 2 o’clock, A. M„ of Thursday, November 20, 1856, the vital spark of life fled from tho body of William Stewart, Eaq., and his immortal spirit passed into that eternity “whose end no eye can reach.” Mr. Stewart was born on the 20th day of August, 1819. He had long been a citizen of Marion county, and was honored by his fellow citizens with several offices of honor and trust. In 1846 he waa elected a Senator in the General Assembly from this county, which office he filled with groat credit to himself and honor to his political friends who had elevated hiih to that position. In 1850, he was elected Clerk of Marion county, for seven years; but the new Constitution having taken three years from his term, ho was, in 185S, re-elected to the same responsible position. How ho discharged his duties as a public officer, his re-election to so important a post, in a political canvass unparallod for excitement and partizan animosity, fully attests. As a private citizen, Mr. S. was highly esteemed. Like every man living ho had his faults; but his virtuet,, too, were many—and wo should throw tho mantle of charity over the foibles of one whom the grave will soon hide forever from the “eyes of all living.”—
John Ritchey Elder (1820-1908).  Born in Harrisburg, he moved to Indianapolis with his parents, was apprenticed to a printer in 1840, and attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1841-1842.  He next worked in New York with the publishing firm of Robert Craighead until he returned to Indianapolis in 1848.  He then pursued a career as a publisher, first (1848-1860) of  The Locomotive, then (1860-1864) of the Indianapolis Sentinel, organ of the Indiana Democratic party, where he was one of three partners. Later on, John R. Elder was active in various businesses.  These included a trusteeship for the Indiana and Illinois Central Railroad, and the treasurership of the Indianapolis, Decatur and Springfield Railroad.  He also served as member and president of the Indianapolis Board of School Trustees (1869-1876) and as a member of the Board of State Charities (1860-1864 and 1889-1902).  In 1848 he married Julia Ann Orr, who died in 1853, as did an infant child. In 1854 he married Amelia Line, of Carlisle. Three children from this marriage survived.

    Terms of Sale
I try and place a penny in every photo to help judge the size of the item, obviously it is there for size comparison and is not included with the item. The standard sized Lincoln head penny in the photograph is there for size comparison ONLY and is not included in the package. We're just trying to help you figure out how big the item is. We try and always be as accurate as we can in the item
description and will gladly answer any question about item size & description when needed. Please e-mail us with any questions BEFORE the end of sale and BEFORE placing a bid. Postage is determined by the U.S. Postal service and is never refundable. Many of the items are VINTAGE and although they are in very fine condition, they may not function as well as when they were made decades ago. So if you intend on using the old item, please be aware that we are selling it for collector value only. In other words, if you intend on using a 50+ year old letter opener and it breaks, don't get mad at us. It may be hard to believe, but we have received a couple negatives because people broke vintage items while trying to use them.
